Reading palatability results: first choice, intake ratio and what actually predicts repeat purchase
A 60:40 intake ratio can be a win or a rounding error depending on panel size — and neither number tells you whether the owner will buy the bag twice.
Two-bowl versus single-bowl
Two-bowl testing measures preference between your formula and a reference, reporting first choice and intake ratio. Single-bowl (monadic) testing measures acceptance over consecutive days and is the better predictor of long-term feeding, because it removes the novelty of side-by-side comparison.
First choice is noisy — it reflects aroma at the bowl, position habits and individual dogs' routines. Intake ratio over multiple days and multiple animals carries far more signal, and you should always ask for the panel size and confidence interval, not just the headline ratio.
Cats and dogs are different projects
Dogs respond strongly to aroma and to fat character; palatant systems built on animal digest and reaction chemistry usually move the number. Cats respond to amino acid profile, texture and phosphoric character, are far more neophobic, and can reject a formula for a kibble shape or coating change that a dog panel would not register.
Plan separate development tracks. A palatant validated on a dog panel should never be assumed to transfer to a feline SKU on the same line.
Application is half the result
Coating uniformity, fat application temperature, vacuum coating versus drum, and the order of fat and palatant application all change measured palatability more than a small change in palatant dosage. Before reformulating, verify coater calibration and confirm actual on-kibble inclusion against the target.
Then check stability: oxidation of the applied fat is the most common cause of a formula that tested well in week one and lost acceptance in the bag by month six.
